Natural Resources

The natural resources collections offer centuries of evidence about how Americans have used the bounty of the American continent and coastal waters. Artifacts related to flood control, dam construction, and irrigation illustrate the nation's attempts to manage the natural world. Oil-drilling, iron-mining, and steel-making artifacts show the connection between natural resources and industrial strength.
Forestry is represented by saws, axes, a smokejumper's suit, and many other objects. Hooks, nets, and other gear from New England fisheries of the late 1800s are among the fishing artifacts, as well as more recent acquisitions from the Pacific Northwest and Chesapeake Bay. Whaling artifacts include harpoons, lances, scrimshaw etchings in whalebone, and several paintings of a whaler's work at sea. The modern environmental movement has contributed buttons and other protest artifacts on issues from scenic rivers to biodiversity.

Accompanying the indicator is a box with fourteen springs, small tools, and an extra piston with top stem.

It consists of a brass piston with one groove, a vented brass cylinder, an internal, double wound spring which can be changed, and a small drum with a spiral spring and single record. The stylus is missing. Accompanying the indicator is a box with two springs, two turn cocks, a scale, and small tools.
- This indicator was made for W. J. Hammer, Chief Inspector of Edison Light Co. There is a nickel-plated name plate on the front marked: “Property of W. J. Hammer, 65 Fifth Ave, New York.”

It consists of a steel piston with three grooves and a guide below the spring; a vented brass cylinder; an internal, single wound spring, which can be changed; a large drum with a coil spring and a single record. There is a Houghtaling worm gear reduction apparatus and a conical brass stylus. The piston, spring, and parts of the linkage are missing. Accompanying the indicator is a box with extra springs, piston, and worm reduction gear.

Askania Battery Operated Indicator
- Description
- Askania Werk A. G. manufactured this low pressure air indicator. It has a battery operated continuous recorder. The record is made with a metal stylus on a red waxed paper one inch in width. A small device separate from the recorder is evidently the sensing element. There is a simple mechanical multiplication of the movement. The accompanying box contains several rolls of the red wax record paper.

Drop Cut-Off Valve and Mechanism Model
- Description
- This is a wooden model of a very simple variable drop cut-off valve gear in which a poppet valve is lifted by a bell crank operated by a cam. The cam is a cylinder that may be moved parallel to its axis, so as to bring any part of the cam against the follower of the bell crank. The cam is so shaped that the valve will open at the same time for all positions of the cam, but the valve will close progressively earlier or later as the cam is moved along its shaft.

Wheelock Valve and Valve Seat Model
- Description
- This is a nicely made model of the valve and valve seat patented by Jerome Wheelock, of Worcester, Massachusetts, September 22, 1885, no. 326820.
- The model represents a wide gridiron slide valve assembled on a skeletonized taper plug, which serves as the valve seat and supports the rock shaft connected to the slide by links or “toggles.” The whole assembly is designed to fit into a taper hole bored into the cylinder block and connected by suitable ports to the cylinder. The advantage of this arrangement over ordinary plug valves is that it does not require that a valve seat be formed within the large cylinder casting, and it permits the delicate fitting of the valve to the valve seat to be performed at a work bench or upon a machine away from the engine.
- The complete Wheelock valve gear (U.S. patent number 326819) consists of one steam valve and one exhaust valve at each end of a cylinder with the rock arms of the exhaust valves permanently connected to the eccentric, so that the valve is at rest during part of the travel of the eccentric, while the steam valves are connected through a detachable latch so that they may be detached and closed quickly at any point during the stroke of the piston.

Indicator with Reducing Wheel
- Description
- This indicator, designed to meet the requirements of early 20th century high-speed engines, employs the lightest construction consistent with strength and accuracy. It is equipped with a reducing wheel, which is a self-contained device capable of reducing engine strokes of 14 to 72 inches to the proper stroke of the paper drum.
- The cylinder of this indicator is supported so that its lower end is free and its longitudinal expansion or contraction is unimpeded. The annular space between the cylinder and the casing is designed to serve as a steam jacket. The piston is an extremely thin steel shell with shallow channels on its outer surface to provide steam packing and moisture lubrication. The piston rod is hollow and is connected to the pencil mechanism by means of a swivel head that can be screwed in or out of the rod to adjust the position of the diagram on the paper. The pencil mechanism is kinematically a pantograph that theoretically gives the pencil point a movement exactly parallel to the piston and the amount of the movement of the piston is multiplied six times at the pencil point. The design of the piston spring is peculiar to this indicator. It is made of a single piece of spring steel wire wound from the middle into a double coil, the ends of which are screwed into a metal head drilled helically to receive the spring.
- The exact strength of spring is obtained by screwing the spring into the head more or less, when they are firmly fixed. The foot of the spring is a small steel bead firmly pinned to the straight portion of wire at the bottom of the spring. This takes the place of the heavier brass foot used in earlier indicators.*

G. H. Crosby Indicator, Patent Model
- Description
- This indicator was filed to the U.S. Patent Office with the application for patent no. 219149 issued to G. H. Crosby, September 2, 1879.
- The model cannot be disassembled and the piston is stuck in the cylinder. It consists of a large drum with spiral spring and single record, but the linkage is different from the other Crosby indicators in the collection: a spring releases to move the drum back away from the pencil print.
- The improvements claimed for this design are a jacket about the steam cylinder to prevent radiation or loss of heat from the cylinder; a method of supporting the cylinder and jacket so that each might expand freely when heated; the carrying of the rotary drum on a lever so that it could be moved up to and away from the marker; and a peculiar parallel motion for effecting the straight line motion of the marker in which “the lever is connected with the piston-rod by a join, and not indirectly by a link, as in the Richards indicator.”*

- Lehmann & Michels manufactured this gas engine indicator, serial number D. R. P. 416623. It is based on patent number 1532692, which was granted to Josef Geiger of Augsburg, Germany, on April 7, 1925.
- The L & M catalog describes this instrument as a Pi-Meter and instrument to measure the mean pressure. There is no record, pointer, or dial. Most likely, it contains a heavy fly wheel that is damped, an impulse of gas pressure each cycle does work on fly wheel, and the work determines the velocity which is transcribed into a mean pressure for each stroke of the piston.

Maihak Steam Engine Indicator
- Description
- This case contains two steam engine indicators, serial numbers 3027 and 3028, manufactured by H. Maihak of Hamburg, Germany. It consists of a steel piston with three grooves; a steel cylinder; an external spring, which is missing on both indicators; a large drum with a spiral spring and continuous record; and a brass stylus. The record paper is inside the drum and uses a ratchet and pawl to turn and retrieve it.

De Juhasz Gas Engine Indicator
- Description
- This gas engine indicator, manufactured by Kalman J. De Juhasz, is very similar to another one in the collection (catalog number 311.621). It is a modification of the steam engine indicator to adapt it for use on diesel engines. The improvements consist of cooling fins, reduced masses of piston and pencil movement, light Bakelite drum, ball bearings for drum and roller, and a built-in indicator.

- Description
- Shimadzu manufactured this gas engine indicator. It is a photographic recorder with a four sided mirror for shutter and a drive with pulley and belt to an external motor. A sensing element is enclosed, but no description is available. Accompanying the indicator is a box with a wrench, two film holders and two cans of Kodak exposed film, extra film holder and mirror assembly. Additionally, there are two tool steel parts with short, knife edges, which are probably parts of the sensing element.

It consists of a steel piston with one groove; a vented brass cylinder; an external, double wound spring; a large drum with a spiral spring and a single record; and a pencil lead stylus. Reid Gyroscopic Engine Governor, Patent Model
- Description
- This model was submitted to the U.S. Patent Office with the application for the patent issued to Joseph Reid, Monroe, Louisiana, October 21, 1879, no. 220867.
- This model represents a hollow vertical spindle geared to be driven by the engine. Pivoted at the top of the spindle is a gyroscopic wheel, which ordinarily rests at an inclination to the spindle but when rotated is acted upon by gyroscopic and centrifugal forces tending to swing the axis of the wheel to the vertical. The changes in position of the wheel follow changes in velocity of the wheel, so that by suitable connections of the axis of the wheel to a governor valve the device will control the speed of the engine to which it is attached.
