After the 2000 presidential election, many states proposed or adopted new voter requirements. Some aimed to ease voter registration, extend voting times, and ensure absentee voting. Others created more stringent requirements for voter identification and residency and cut back on early voting. Supporters claimed that the new regulations would help eliminate voter fraud. Opponents countered that there is little evidence of widespread voter fraud and that these laws disenfranchise poor and minority voters.
