Drawing of fenced Menlo Park compound under blanket of snow.

This is a picture of the Menlo Park compound as it appeared in early 1881. The original laboratory is the long building in the center. The library-office is at the front right and at the left is a shed for burning oil lamps (to produce carbon lamp-black for telephone transmitters). The machine shop is at the rear, and nestled between it and the laboratory is the glass-blowing house. Notice the electric train in the right.
