Vote! The Machinery of Democracy

Closed February 20, 2005

This exhibition explored the evolution of voting in the United States, and the controversies along the way, from early elections to the modern patchwork of manual, mechanical, and electronic balloting. Visitors could view different types of voting machines and ballots, including the butterfly ballot used in Palm Beach County, Florida in 2000, and find out how their county cast votes in the 2004 election using an interactive map.

The website for this exhibition was retired in 2021 due to incompatibility with current web standards. A view of the previous home page can be seen below. Information on this topic can be found in the online exhibition American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith.
