Known as both a bop drummer and Latin percussionist, he performed at Carnegie Hall with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker (1947) and later worked with Milt Jackson, Sonny Rollins, Ella Fitzgerald, and others. His oral history is available at the National Museum of American History.
1929 — Trumpeter Chet Baker born in Yale, OK. He became very popular in the 1950s, by virtue of his boyish good looks in addition to his laid-back trumpet and vocal style. Baker performs with Gerry Mulligan on Walkin’ Shoes, included in Jazz: The Smithsonian Anthology (Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, 2011).
1930 — Trumpeter/vocalist Louis Armstrong records Sweethearts on Parade, featuring an especially soulful vocal and a virtuosic pair of trumpet choruses.
1938 — First From Spirituals to Swing concert held at Carnegie Hall. Organized by John Hammond in memory of blues singer Bessie Smith, it was one of the first times that jazz, blues, or gospel music had been presented in a formal, concert format.
1954 — The Modern Jazz Quartet records Django in Hackensack, NJ. This track, first released on the album of the same name, highlights the elements of cool jazz and Third Stream music (a blend of classical and jazz music) that the MJQ was known for performing, and is included inJazz: The Smithsonian Anthology (Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, 2011).
