D.C. Community Clinic Spotlight

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History updated its Giving in America exhibition on September 6, 2024, to include objects related to the history of Mary’s Center. The center began in 1988 as a Washington, D.C., clinic dedicated to providing medical care to women fleeing violence in Central America, many of them victims of trauma that resulted in pregnancy.

José Gregorio Hernández folk art sculpture
This folk sculpture of early 20th century Venezuelan doctor José Gregorio Hernández belonged to Mary’s Center pediatrician Maria Marquez. Hernández provided medical care to Venezuelans in need and has become symbolic of charity in the form of healthcare. Marquez, a Venezuelan immigrant, credits Hernández as one of her role models in life for providing outstanding medical care.

The Undocumented Organizing Collecting Initiative, a program under the museum’s Center for Restorative History, aims to preserve the histories of undocumented organizing movements through the recording of oral histories. The center’s webpage allows users to listen to interviews, view portraits of the participating narrators, browse quotes and read interview summaries. The multiyear research effort collected stories to provide a national perspective on the diverse undocumented organizing movement from undocumented organizers across South California, Chicago, Massachusetts, Nebraska, North Carolina, Washington, D.C., and Mexico City.
