The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History is proud to offer internships in a variety of museum fields throughout the year.
What is an internship?
According to the Smithsonian's Office of Fellowships and Internships, an internship is a "workplace integrated learning experience related to academic or career goals guided by a Smithsonian mentor." This means that internships here at NMAH are educational opportunities where an intern learns, under a mentor's guidance, about a museum field that interests them academically or professionally.
What internships are offered at NMAH?
NMAH has offered internships in every department of the museum, including (but definitely not limited to!) curatorial and collections management, education and audience engagement, exhibition design and production, communications and marketing, special events and donor relations, and museum management. However, the specific internships offered each cycle (spring, summer, or fall) depend on mentor availability and upcoming possible internship projects.
Some teams at NMAH are actively seeking interns for the upcoming internship cycle. Click here to learn more about upcoming internship opportunities at NMAH!
Some teams at NMAH aren’t currently actively seeking interns for the upcoming internship cycle but may be interested in reviewing applications just in case an internship project arises. Click here to learn more about NMAH’s general application pools!
The James Lollar Hagan Internship, which takes place every fall, is all about creating opportunities for emerging museum professionals. Click here to learn more about the Hagan Internship!
