“Viva Kennedy” clubs were part of a grassroots movement that connected Latino communities with Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts, the 1960 Democratic candidate for president. Operating independently of any political party, these clubs sprang up across the Southwest and Midwest. Kennedy’s widespread support among Latinos (for example, he received 91% of the Latino vote in Texas) helped propel him to victory over his Republican opponent Vice President Richard Nixon.
