Gray accepts objects from Jamie McDonald and the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department and the Fairfax County Professional Fire Fighters & Paramedics—IAFF Local 2068—into the National Philanthropy Collection. McDonald’s items are from the 2013 BMoreGivesMore #GivingTuesday campaign that raised $5.7 million in a day and earned Baltimore the #MostGenerousCity in America honor. IAFF Local 2068’s donations include a firefighter’s boot used to collect money for muscular dystrophy, a sign, and T-shirts.

JOHN L. GRAY is the Elizabeth MacMillan Director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, dedicated to preserving and sharing an unparalleled collection of national treasures. Under Gray’s leadership, the museum is boldly reimagining its three-floor West Wing around dynamic exhibitions and programs on the themes of Innovation, Democracy and the Peopling of America, and American Culture. Prior to becoming the museum’s ninth director, he was founding president of the Autry National Center of the American West in Los Angeles. He serves on the board of St. John’s College in Annapolis and Santa Fe.

THE FAIRFAX COUNTY PROFESSIONAL FIRE FIGHTERS AND PARAMEDICS (IAFF Local 2068) consists of nearly 2,000 active and retired firefighters and paramedics, mechanics from the Fire and Rescue Department Apparatus Shops, and 9-1-1 call takers and dispatchers working at the Department of Public Safety Communications Center. Its fire fighters and paramedics respond from 38 fire stations inside seven district battalions while providing emergency services to over one million citizens residing within 404 square miles of Fairfax County property.
