The Real Stories

The story of the American Civil War is vast and complex. Yet important insights can be found in small places. Each character in Ripped Apart is a composite of real stories, real artifacts, and real issues from the Museum’s rich collections. Together, this content reveals the narrative of four everyday people from the 19th century. Through these small stories we can begin to answer big questions.

  • What was everyday life like for people during the Civil War?
  • What role did photography play in 19th century life?
  • What differences between the North and South led to the Civil War?
  • How do museums piece together evidence to understand the past?
