Barbara Paroby’s musical background led her to volunteer with the Steinway Diary Project in 2007.

She found it interesting to be able to conduct research using online access to the historical issues of The New York Times. Shortly after joining, however, she returned to a full time job and had to withdraw from the project.

Paroby’s interest in the project stems from her musical background. She learned to play piano beginning at age five on her parents’ Steinway piano. Her experience led to intense musical studies on both piano and clarinet culminating in a BS in music from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and an MA in music education from Teachers College at Columbia University in New York City, New York. Currently, Barbara is a teacher living in Hampton, VA with her husband David, an officer with the Army Band Program.
