In the page heading of this page William crossed out the date March 22d 1886.
It is a mystery why the March 22, 1886 date is at the beginning of this book of the diary. An even greater mystery is that the last page of this book, which follows the conclusion of Dec. 31, 1893, has a few lines headed “INDEX, March 22d 1886.” Both are in the same hand, which looks not to be William’s. It appears that the ledger book in which William wrote this volume of the Diary was initally intended to be an account book. The book has preprinted page numbers, beginning at 1 and going to 360.
