New York + Astoria, Aug 29th 1891.

 

At 11.30 A.M. I walk down to factory, hold Court, Menzl H.W.T.St. Amann & Sprenger there, decide to have new boiler instead of patching up old one, and H.W.T.St. to try and get another brand of soft Iron in Allentown No 1. cannot be had. Feel slight touch left wrist and left knee. Both Villas, of A. J. Menzl at cor Riker + Steinway Avenues, and Francis J. Oakes next to new Union Church are making good progress, as also do the alterations and additions to the old Church for Steinway Free Circulating library and Kindergarten. Sewer on Riker Ave. from Steinway Ave to Creek also progresses well. Gildemeester returns to New York by way of North Beach and Grand Pier to East 99th street. Business has commenced to pick up considerably this week. In afternoon Mr. + Mrs. Henry A. Cassebeer, jr. visit us at Mansion, also Fritz v. B. jr. Ford of the World & two others, having taken a spin in the “Eileen” 4 horse Daimler Motor boat. Play Skat with L.v.B. & R.R.t jr. win 64 Cents

Aug 30th Sunday.

To my regret it is a cold rainy day and looks as though the equinox had come. L.v.B. with us at dinner & supper. Julius Francke comes in afternoon with the sad news that Oscar R. Steins died at his home at noon today of heart failure, he being the last in his family of his generation. He had gone to Elka Park. Catskills, came back from there with Typhoid fever, I wrote him a kind letter some weeks ago not to worry, his salary would be paid and his place would be kept open, which had a very beneficial effect on him. But he finally succumbed to his various ailments. Have a touch in left wrist and
