NewYork+Astoria, Sept. 8th 1894.

 

I have to loan him money, again + again. The N.Y. Times has my interview in, splendidly this A.M. The Times says that Mr. Ottendorfer is quite ill with Erysipelas. Adam Weber returned by the "Columbia from Europe yesterday Prof. Hermann Helmholtz died today at Charlottenburg, having suffered a stroke ofparalisis a second time. Today called Mrs. Emma Steins and Miss Josephine Grimm. Work all day + evg..

Sept 9th Sund.

Beautiful day and pure atmosphere. Germany excited throughout about the Emperor Wilhelm II speech. Gust Burkard brings me 3 estimates in addition to Geisers, for building the Steam Engine Fire house, Peter N. Phillips being the lowest, gets the project at $8194.00/100. In afternoon L.v.B. +wife, Meta, Maud +Frl. Krüsi, Otto Toussaint, myself and attendant Leonce take a sail in my Daimler Motor boat Gemini, to Execution Rock & back a lovely trip. North Beach seems to be well patronized, too. Sent M. McNellis again $15. by mail. Frl. Krüsi leaves for Paupac Pa for one week. Baberich is learning lots of new tricks and words

Sept 10th Mond.

To St. Hall early. Tretbar is quite ill with Rheumatism and salicylic cure. Otto Sutro arrives pr. steamer Trave, and so does Mayor Gilroy, Sutro wants St+S. to engage his daughters

Sept. 11th Tuesd.

Again almost hounded to death by mendicants, and Sutro. We last night cabled our condolence to Mrs. von Helmholtz. Take supper at L.K. play Skat and lose over $200/100

Sept 12th Wed.

At Steinway Mansion all day til 3 P.M. then drive out with the three children, down to recreation grounds, then to Steinway Protestant Union Church, hold our Meeting, the Officers, myself as President are all reelected. I donate about $1000. which I had advanced to Hünerbein to the Church and Luke Kouwenhoven $850 which he advanced on the Parsonage. Both Church & Parsonage are free and clear from debt. It is said that Gleason stole electric power from the Steinway Railway Comp. and that Gleason abused Eugene L. Bushe yesterday in the streets and called him the vilest names, Played Skat with L v.B + Cassebeer, lost 70 Cents
