Working with film cameras and historic photographic processes continues to be my primary form of artistic expression. Even more so during the pandemic while other pursuits are more limited. Normally I prefer ‘straight’ prints, allowing the detail on the negative tell the story. More recently however, a pandemic-inspired desire to delve deeper sparked an urge to explore mixing the photographs with other media. So it was that as the November election drew nigh, and my concern over the outcome crested, my emotions spilled onto a cyanotype self portrait, which I approached with watercolor, ink, and pencils. It was surprisingly easy to give my subconscious free reign, and it took off like a shot. It wasn’t satisfied with just adding a mask, hat, and overshirt. A white-out was also needed to express my pre-election jitters.
