World Building

Due to the pandemic, I was evacuated two months early from Armenia, where I lived and worked in a beautiful lakeside village as a Peace Corps Volunteer for two years. I quarantined for awhile before taking a job in New Mexico working with kids and teens. They can be so harsh yet warm; I never know if their cruel tendencies negate the tenderness, or if it all accumulates into something meaningful. I also downloaded a dating app and for the first time, at 27, started seeing a girl. Nothing about my life feels familiar-- like I'm living as a guest in every room of my life-- but I try to believe that I am part of a community. With my female roommates and staff at work, I sometimes like to believe I'm skirting close to something like the caring miniature world built by the women in Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
