By the mid-l 700s, home life was changing for families like the Choates, who benefited from a growing British North American economy. Consumer goods that were once exotic and expensive were becoming more widely available and made houses more attractive and comfortable.

Running a well-to-do household such as the Choates' demanded an enormous amount of work from Sarah, her children, and a servant or two. Many aspects of daily life remained difficult.
