William wrote his diary in nine ledger books of varying sizes. Altogether the nine books have 2,798 pages, of which he wrote on 2,525.

Vol. I. April 20, 1861, to May 31, 1869. Bound in boards with leather corners, original leather spine repaired with green tape. Sticker inside front cover: in shield: "How & Ferry / Booksellers / 76 Bowery / N. Y." Pages measure 16.7 x 20.2 cm. Paper lined. Book c. 1.5 cm. thick without boards. 280 pages filled.

Vol. II. June 1, 1869, to December 31, 1873. Bound in boards with leather corners, original leather spine repaired with green tape. Sticker inside front cover: "Andrew A. Möser / STATIONER / 22 william ST. / New York." Pages measure 19.4 x 25.5 cm. Paper lined, with pre-printed numbers, 1-219. Book c. 1.5 cm. thick without boards. No blank pages.

Vol. III. January 1, 1874, to December 31, 1875. Bound in boards covered with marbled paper, leather corners, original leather spine repaired with green tape. Vol. V. January 1, 1878, to December 31, 1880. Bound in boards covered with marbled paper, leather corners, original leather spine repaired with green tape. Sticker inside front cover, light blue paper: "WILLY WALLACH, / Stationer, / Printer & Blank Book Manufacturer, / 36 PARK ROW, N. Y. / No. 13. J. On end-paper facing page 1 are recorded the weights of William R. Steinway and Theodore E. Steinway on February 25, 1894.
