New York, Decbr 17th 1881.

Dec. 17. Sat.

Fine day, at 11 AM by 2d Ave. L. road to Astoria, present at opening the 11 bids for improving Flushing Ave. postpone acting on them until Tuesday at 5 P.M Then ride with George H. Smith through Steinway Ave. & Jackson Ave. work nearly all done, stable building has front framing being done, our factory extension up to 3d story, and dock nearly all finished Home at 6 P.M. with Paula to Arion Concert at St. Hall tell her briefly about Jew Stern & my talk with Oscar Weber

Decbr 18th Sunday.

Lovely clear day. Work at Store in the forenoon At L.K. Session Build. Com. in afternoon. Home in eve'g playing Skat with RdRt jr. Henry Cassebeer & Chas. St. lose $100/100. At 2 A.M. wife thinks that slight labor pains have begun

Decbr 19th Monday.

I call in Mrs. Forman & and send to Dr. Gulecke who is sick, and sends Dr. Langmann, I go home at 12 o'clock, find labor pains set in regularly, I run up to L.K. Building, climb all over, look at Iron colums & girders home at 5 P.M. labor pains continue, Dr. Langmann remains all night I sleep in South Extension room

Death of Jew Louis Stern

Decbr 20th Tuesday.

Rise at 7 A.M. no result, go to store, return home at. 11 A.M. & remain with wife, who suffers dreadfully, at 8.30 P.M. Dr. concludes to use the Biceps, as wife shows signs of exhaustion. All preparations are made and precisely at 8.50. P.M. a splendid boy is born, (naval string being around his neck) wife is somewhat torn & Dr. sews her up. The baby is only after 30 minutes taken hold of cleaned & washed, weighs fully 9 #s. was held by Mrs. Evers, who throughout assisted my wife greatly. George, Paula and RdRt are overjoyed, the latter at 10 P.M. takes two cablegrams to head office to Theo. and R. Ranft Dresden "Splendid boy born all well" I retire at 11 P.M. very happy
