NewYork, May 8th 1895.

 

to Chicago for the opening of Steinway Hall there. Work home til 1 P.M. get off mail by Steamer Columbia

May 9th Thursday

Fix up Reinhold Geilfuss matter, at 11 A.M. drive to St. Hall and Rapid Transit, from 12-2 P.M. work with all the Commissioners except Fitch and the Mayor, adopt final route, general plan of constructon, and report to Common Council. All resolutions are passed unanimously. In afternoon Frida, Tony + Chas. Kreischer called at my house, and I explained everything to them as to Edw. B. Kreischers Estate. Ottendorfers Patrick calls and takes leave from Leonce, telling me that Ottendorfer will leave May 16th pr. Augusta Victoria. Work home in evg. Heinrich Conried called on me, made Summer arrangements regading Theatre for this one season. Dr. Langmann called yesterday and gave me the result of his investigsation regarding my son George A. Steinway, who seems to have nearly recovered physically and mentally. Receive very funny letter from A. J. Menzl regarding his house + Mortgage thereon. Chas.H. St. telegraphs at 4 P.M. from Chicago that he arrived safely, and it is intensely hot. It is also very hot for the season here in NewYork. I walked much better today, though still on crutches. It was 83 degrees in the shade today.

May 10th frid.

Still warm +sunny weather, I can walk slowly on sticks and am getting better constantly. Am badly pestered by callers and people in trouble, Mayor Gleason and his bookkeeper Coffin, S. Trenkmann $20 Christmas, Dr. Schödler, Com. German Veterans gave him $100 David Brooks loaned him $70. he is in great distress. H. Kleber calls and states that he is about to wind up the F. Grote +Co. concern. A.v.Holwedes crazy crusade against Dora Burmeister continues and drives me almost to despair with the extra work of constantly writing about this matter. Work in evg til after 10 P.M

May 11th sat.

Very warm day, put on summer clothes, and work in my room with upturned sleeves. Receive a large mail of May 1st King of Saxony matter in which A. v. Holwede demonstrates his Vanity and foolishness to a degree which I never thought possible. Both Blumenberg + Stetson telegraph that opening of Steinway Hall Chicago. Last night letters from Saxon Kammerherr to Dora Burmeister and today the letter of thanks
